Having endured a second set comeback from world No.5 Simona Halep during the quarterfinals, Serena Williams will be hoping for redemption after falling in last year’s semifinals to return to the top of her game and be in with a shot at retaining her place as world No.1.

Her 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win over Halep saw her drop her first set all tournament having recorded wins over Ekaterina Makarova 6-3, 6-3, Vania King 6-3, 6-3, Johanna Larsson 6-2, 6-1 and Yaroslava Shvedova 6-2, 6-3 in her road to the final four.

Williams is on a quest to win her seventh title in New York having pulled out a massive 18 aces and 50 winners against Halep with a second grand slam win for the calendar year to see her pass Steffi Graff and take outright second with 23 titles to her name behind only Australia’s Margaret Court on 24.

Karolina Pliskova is in the midst of a record grand slam record having never previously been past the third round in what has been a brilliant month for the Czech.

She took her first WTA Premier 5 title late last month claiming victory at the Cincinnati Masters after falling out of the Rogers Cup to Simona Halep in straight sets during the third round, a record finish.

Her campaign in Ohio kicked off wins over Jelena Ostapenko 6-4, 6-1 and Misaki Doi 7-5, 6-3 before Svetlana Kuznetsova gave her a scare, winning in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

Pliskova then went on to defeat world No.3 Garbine Muguruza in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 and world No.2 Angelique Kerber 6-3, 6-1.

She has breezed through her US Open draw with wins over minnows Sofia Kenin and Montserrat Gonzalez in straight sets before defeating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-2, 6-4 and Venus Williams 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 to book her place in a quarterfinals matchup with Croat Ana Konjuh whom she swiftly defeated in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.

Only one meeting has become between the pair with Williams defeating Pliskova in straight sets 7-5, 6-2 at Stanford in 2014.

The winner will play either Caroline Wozniacki or Angelique Kerber in the final for title glory.

Prediction
Serena Williams will move through to her ninth final at Flushing Meadows in a bid for a seventh crown at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Williams in straight sets.
