Just hours after the Brisbane Broncos were ousted from the NRL Finals by the North Queensland Cowboys in a thrilling extra-time battle, master coach Wayne Bennett has announced he’s separated from his wife Trish.

67-year old Bennett, who has been married for 42 years and has three children with Trish, confirmed the decision in a statement which was released to the media on Saturday.

In the statement, Bennett said the split happened some time ago and that he will continue in his role for the Brisbane Broncos, but also asked for privacy for his family and himself.

“As an NRL head coach and thereby a public figure I today inform you about a personal matter and the fact I have separated from my wife and the family home some time ago,” the statement said.

“I will continue to appear publicly in my role at the Brisbane Broncos but at the same time ask that you respect my personal privacy and that of my family.”

Bennett has spent most of his coaching career at the Brisbane Broncos although he had short stints at both the St George Illawarra Dragons and Newcastle Knights between 2009 and 2014.

Throughout his coaching career, Bennett has won seven premierships and also has a deal lined up to coach the England National team.
