No.7 Dustin Poirier will be looking to move one step closer to a title shot when he faces off against No.10 Michael Johnson. Join The Roar from 12pm AEST for live coverage and round-by-round updates.
Since his loss to featherweight champion Conor McGregor back in 2014, Dustin Poirier has been on fire.
Making the move up to lightweight, Poirier is riding a four-fight win streak, with three of this wins coming via first-round knockouts.
One his big wins came over Joe Duffy – who was the last person to defeat Conor McGregor before Nate Diaz. In his last bout however, Poirier proved how dangerous of a striker he really was by knocking out Bobby Green at UFC 199.
Coming off two losses in a row, Michael Johnson knows that it’s do-or-die time if he wishes to stay in title contention.
Johnson picked up an impressive four-fight win streak over Joe Lauzon, Gleison Tibau, Melvin Guillard and Edson Barboza, before falling short against Beneil Dariush in a highly-controversial split decision.
In his last bout he earned ‘fight of the night’ honours, however once again fell short in a decision loss against Nate Diaz.
Prediction
Both men have plenty to fight for, and have proven to be durable. In a five-round fight, it could come down to who has more stamina. Poirier has seen the ‘championship rounds’ but Johnson has not, and that could make the real difference.
