David Pocock will take no further part in the 2016 Rugby Championship after it was confirmed on Sunday that he had suffered a broken hand in Australia’s 36-20 win over Argentina.

The Wallabies have a week off before trips to South Africa and London over the following weeks, where they will play the Springboks and the Pumas respectively.

The chance to finish second behind New Zealand in the Rugby Championship is on the line, but they could find themselves holding the spoon if they drop both matches.

Pocock will undergo surgery on his hand and is expected to be out for 4-6 weeks, with the goal of returning in time for Australia’s third Bledisloe Cup match against the All Blacks on 22 October.

Failing that, he’ll aim to be ready for the team’s spring tour of Europe, which starts against Wales on 5 November.

The injury saw Pocock play less than half of the match against the Pumas.

“It was quite swollen so it was hard for him to move his hands,” said Australian coach Michael Cheika. “He wanted to play through, I had to take him off.”

It’s the second major injury that Pocock has sustained in 2016 after suffering a fractured eye socket in the first match of the three-Test series against England earlier in the year. That injury ruled him out of the remaining two matches in that series.

“Straight off the bat really sad for Poey,” Hooper said. “He puts himself in such a great physical nick to play, that sucks for him. We’ve got guys chomping at the bit to get in and it’s a loss to the squad.”
