Jason Day withdrew from the rich FedExCup finale in Atlanta today, complaining of back pain.

He lasted only eight holes today, after three holes where he had an eagle and two birdie putts, sinking just one birdie and not even touching the hole on the others.

Normally Day would have converted all three which would have given him the lead.

But it hasn’t been all bad for the Australian this week, having signed a 10-year contract with Nike pre-tournament worth $100 million.

His withdrawal has left the best-performed golfer in the world at the moment – Dustin Johnson – in control with only compatriot Kevin Chappell pushing.

Johnson’s immense power and accuracy off the tee made a tough East Lake course in Atlanta look docile – while every other golfer struggled.

Johnson is the man to beat, teeing off in the third round, moving day, at 7-under after rounds of 66 and 67 that included 10 birdies and three bogeys.

One off the pace is Chappell with rounds of 66 and 68 with seven birdies and just the one bogey in his consistent 36 holes.

The normal suspects – Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Adam Scott, Patrick Reed, and Phil Mickelson all had their downside moments.

McIlroy carded four bogeys and a birdie out, with three birdies on the way home for a 70, and 2-under.

Spieth was nowhere near his controlled self with two bogeys and a birdie out, with a double and a birdie on the back nine for 72 and even with the card.

Scott had a double, three bogeys, and a birdie going out, but three birdies on the way home for a 71 and even with the card.

Reed opened with a double and another bogey going out, but four birds and a bogey on the way home for a 70 and 3-over.

And Mickelson suffered a triple, a bogey. and a birdie going out, and a sole birdie on the way home for a 72, and 6-over.
