After the second day of the Test was ended by rain, things have become a bit more even in this match between India and New Zealand as we prepare for Day 3. Join The Roar for live scores from the third day of the Test at Kanpur, beginning from 2pm (AEST).

India batted first in this match and made a strong start to the Test – openers Lokesh Rahul and Murali Vijay both put in solid knocks with 32 and 65 respectively, and Cheteshwar Pujara added another 62 from No.3.

While Virat Kohli was taken out early for an uncharacteristically low nine runs, the home side were able to grind out a total of 318 runs from 97 overs, with no one able to better Vijay’s 65.

New Zealand however have made a very strong start to their first innings since coming in Martin Guptill their only loss so far, taken leg-before-wicket by Umesh Yadav for 21 runs.

However Tom Latham and Kane Williamnson have since formed a strong partnership that held them through until the day was ended on rain. They’re on 56 and 65 not out respectively, with a partnership of 117 runs so far.

That puts the Black Caps in a good position, just 166 runs behind India’s total with nine wickets still in hand.

However, the big concern for both sides now will be the weather. If we’re going to get a result out of this match, we’ll need to hope that rain doesn’t continue to be a factor.

If the rain holds off and the match comes to a result, it looks likely to be a thriller with either team capable of winning it from here.

Of course, if the rain returns again we might be denied what could be a really great Test. So here’s hoping that can be avoided.
