The 2016 Brownlow Medal for the AFL’s best and fairest player has been won by Patrick Dangerfield with a total of 35 votes.
Dangerfield fought off challenges from Sydney’s Luke Parker (26 votes) and Richmond’s fast-finishing Dustin Martin (25 votes) to claim the first Brownlow Medal of his career with a record 35 votes.
Parker started the count strongly, taking an early lead over Aaron Hall (who claimed nine votes in the first three matches) and Dangerfield.
But, as is so often the case, Sydney’s deep, star-studded midfield, which helps them so much on the field, proved to be a hindrance on Brownlow night, with the likes of Josh Kennedy (14 votes), Tom Mitchell (12 votes) and Dan Hannebery (21 votes) taking votes of Parker.
Dangerfield had no such troubles despite the presence of Joel Selwood (18 votes) on his side, and with four rounds to go, it was clear that the Geelong superstar was on his way to a maiden Charlie. Dangerfield then wrapped up the medal with a round to spare when he opened up a six-vote lead at the end of Round 22.
Dangerfield set a new record for the most Brownlow votes in a season with 35, topping the 34 set by Collingwood’s Dane Swan in 2011.
Also polling well was Adelaide’s Rory Sloane, who finished on 24 votes, but was ineligible for the award thanks to a suspension during the year.
Western Bulldogs talisman Marcus Bontempelli finished on a team-best 20 votes, enough to earn him eighth place overall.
