Daw’s effort was good enough to see off the contenders from Essendon’s Joe Daniher and the Giants’ Rory Lobb during the Brownlow Medal presentation.

In what was an up-and-down season for Daw and, indeed, the Kangaroos, the emerging ruckman did show regular glimpses of his unreal athleticism and potential, none more so than in his Mark of the Year-winning grab.

With North Melbourne cruising to a victory over the Magpies, Daw rose highest in a pack on the boundary of Etihad Stadium to pull down a spectacular hanger.

Unfortunately for Daw, he and the Kangaroos bombed out of the finals in the first week against the Crows, but the award will no doubt provide Daw and the club with something of a silver lining.

Daw saw off two other spectacular grabs from Lobb and Daniher to take home the award.

Daniher’s mark was in a similar vein to Daw’s, with the young Essendon forward leaping right over Sam Gilbert to bring down an astounding pack mark.

While Daniher and Daw were both nominated for their high-flying acrobatics, it was a courageous mark which saw Lobb earn his stripes.

Playing Geelong in drizzly conditions at Simmonds Stadium, Lobb went back with the flight of the ball straight into a pack which had a number of players looking more likely than the GWS big man to grab the mark.

It was Lobb, however, who came down with the ball, although he and Geelong forward Daniel Menzel were left considerably worse for wear following the contest.

But, despite Lobb’s courage and Daniher’s athleticism, it was Daw who took home the Mark of the Year for his stunning grab against the Magpies.

Earlier in the night, Adelaide star small forward Eddie Betts took home the AFL’s Goal of the Year award for a spectacular effort against the GWS Giants, while Jimmy Bartel was given the Jim Stynes Community Leadership award for his work in promoting domestic violence awareness.
