Australian rookie Thon Maker has had a horror start to his first NBA pre-season by suffering a wrist injury in the Milwaukee Bucks’ first practice session.

The 216cm 19-year-old left the team’s training camp in Madison, Wisconsin, and was sent back to team headquarters in Milwaukee for tests, the Milwaukee Sentinel Journal reported on Wednesday (Thursday AEST).

Maker was expected to return to the University of Wisconsin campus in Madison, where the team has set up camp.

Maker, born in Sudan and raised in Australia, was one of the surprise selections of the June NBA Draft when the Bucks took him with the 10th overall pick.

The Bucks also have Australian point guard Matthew Dellavedova on their roster after luring him with a $US38 million four-year deal.

Dellavedova is being schooled at the pre-season camp by two of the greatest point guards – Jason Kidd and John Stockton.

Kidd is the Bucks’ head coach and invited Hall of Famer Stockton to their training camp.
