Melbourne’s weather is notorious for its unpredictability, but that’s not going to stop us from doing everything we can to get an accurate weather forecast for tomorrow’s AFL grand final between the Sydney Swans and Western Bulldogs, which starts at 2:30pm (AEST).

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting a typically temperamental day in Melbourne for the first day of October, with the chance of a shower and winds coming in from the north:

Cloudy. High (70%) chance of showers, most likely in the morning. Winds northwesterly 20 to 30 km/h turning northerly 15 to 25 km/h in the evening.

The government agency is predicting a fairly mild day, temperature-wise, with a minimum of 10 degrees getting up to a maximum of 18.

The predicted rainfall isn’t expected to be too heavy, with the BoM listing the possible rainfall as anything up to three millimetres.

However, a closer look at Weatherzone, reveals that rainfall isn’t particularly threatening during the game itself. At 3pm, half an hour after the opening bounce, the chance of rain is listed at just 22 per cent, and that figure drops to a paltry eight per cent at 6pm, which is around 45 minutes after the game is expected to finish up.

With the mild temperature and lingering cloud cover, that should provide both teams with fairly good playing conditions for the duration of the season decider, although any early rainfall could create a slick surface for what’s sure to be a frantic opening to the game.

At any rate, the two sides both excel at winning the ball in the contested battle, and a bit of rain won’t affect their attack on the ball, although it may limit the accuracy of handballs in tight.

The wind, which is forecast to reach speeds of 30km/h, could create a bit of consternation for the players, especially given how the wind tends to swirl around the MCG, making kicking difficult.

But, all in all, the forecast is a pretty decent one, and will hopefully provide the Swans and Bulldogs with everything they need to put on a terrific game of footy.
