A George Bailey half-century has helped Australia set South Africa a target of 295 in the first one-day international in Centurion.

Bailey top-scored with 74 as Australia recovered from 6-192 to reach 9-294 in the first of five ODIs against the Proteas.

John Hastings (51) provided vital support for Bailey in the final 20 overs as the pair added 79 runs for the seventh wicket to lift Australia out of trouble.

It is Hastings’ first ODI half-century, eclipsing his previous highest score of 48 against New Zealand in Wellington in February.

The partnership was eventually broken by impressive South African quick Adile Phehlukwayo, who finished with 4-44 off his 10 overs in his second ODI appearance.

Bailey was removed in the 48th over, one of two late wickets for Dale Steyn (2-65) in his first ODI appearance since October last year.

Australia’s middle-overs wobble came after a bright start by openers David Warner and Aaron Finch.

The pair rattled to 64 inside nine overs before Wayne Parnell’s (1-56) arrival into the attack, resulted in Warner’s dismissal for 20.

Finch (33) and Steve Smith (8) were both dismissed in the same Phehlukwayo over as the 20-year-old made his mark.

Finch, who came into the Australian team in place of Usman Khawaja in the only change to the lineup which comfortably defeated Ireland on Tuesday, was left fuming following his dismissal.

The Victorian stood his ground after Parnell snared a low catch at short fine leg, roaring in rage after the third umpire deemed the catch to be legitimate despite having a close look at the incident on several replays.

Phehlukwayo struck again to remove Mitchell Marsh after the Australian scored a breezy 31, before Travis Head (18) and Matthew Wade (5) departed in quick fashion to leave the tourists struggling at 6-192.

South Africa will be chasing the target without opener Hashim Amla, who was ruled out of the match due to flu.

Rilee Roussou has replaced Amla at the top of the order for the Proteas, who are also without AB de Villiers for the series due to an elbow injury.
