The Hawthorn Hawks have made a trade that will likely prove essential to their deal to land Jaeger O’Meara, trading picks No.23 and No.36 this year, and their 2017 first-round pick, to the St Kilda Saints for picks No.10 and No.68 this year.

St Kilda’s COO Ameet Bains said:

“This deal allows us to retain a first round draft pick, albeit for potential use in twelve months’ time.

“The most pleasing aspect of the exchange is that it allows us to re-enter this year’s draft with two selections in the second round.

“This trade also gives us the flexibility to explore the possibility during the remainder of the trade period of coming back into the first round in 2016.”

Hawthorn list manager Graham Wright said:

“Pick 10 is a fantastic acquisition for the club and we are pleased to be able to reach a deal with St Kilda today.

“We would like to thank them for their cooperation and professional approach in getting this deal finalised.”

The Hawks no doubt are happy to have made the deal as it will likely allow them to complete their acquisition of Jaeger O’Meara.

The current belief is that O’Meara will head to Hawthorn for O’Meara and a player, though what player that might be isn’t clear.

The Saints however stand to potentially be the big winners in the deal.

While they’ll have to go without a first-round pick this year, adding picks No.23 and No.36 ensures they’ll still be involved in the draft.

And Hawthorn’s first round-pick next year could prove to be a serious windfall, especially if the Hawks have something of a down year after a tumultuous off-season.
