“We’re thrilled to have Jack join the Saints and with his ability to play both in the midfield and forward, we think he’ll strongly complement our young, emerging list while filling a key need,” said St Kilda’s COO Ameet Bains.

“Jack’s had some strong performances and at only 20-years-old we think he has a lot of potential to continue to develop and be a quality player for the club.”

Giants football manager Wayne Campbell said the club was happy with the result despite the disappointment of losing Steele.

“Jack wanted to explore other opportunities and we feel this trade satisfies everyone involved.

“While disappointed that Jack is moving on, this trade puts us in a strong position for the 2017 draft to continue to bring in the best talent to our football club.

“We thank Jack for his contribution over the past two seasons and wish him all the best for the rest of his career.”

For St Kilda Steele will provide another layer of hard-working, ball-winning ability to their midfield that will surely be helpful in their quest to surge further up the ladder in 2017.

The Giants are understandably disappointed to lose him but it means no more than a loss of some depth and St Kilda’s second-round pick could prove to be a valuable commodity either in next year’s draft or a trade before then.

It makes the Saints the first club this year to trade away a 2017 draft pick, though given Steele was bid on in the first round of the dradt two years ago and has impressed whenever seen at AFL level, you could definitely say they’ve gotten a real bargain.

For Steele himself the move should prove very beneficial. He has always looked a likely type but often been squeezed out by the enormous amount of talent at the Giants – at the Saints, there’s a good chance he plays every game next year and could have a real breakout season.
