When the final day of the 2016 AFL trade period began, it was unclear whether or not Gold Coast’s Jaeger O’Meara would get the traded to Hawthorn that he had asked for some time prior.

In the end, the answer was yes – although it took until the final minutes before the deadline, O’Meara did become a Hawthorn player after a complicated series of trades that saw the Hawks essentially remove themselves from this year’s draft.

Hawthorn list manager Graham Wright said:

“We are pleased that a deal has finally been reached to bring Jaeger to Hawthorn.

“It has been a lengthy process and we are rapt that we can now officially welcome him to our club.

“At only 22 years of age he is an exciting prospect and has many years of good football ahead of him.

“He has undergone some recent injury troubles, however we are confident that our medical and conditioning staff can work with Jaeger to see him produce his best football.

“I, like many of our fans, look forward to seeing what he can deliver in the brown and gold.”

Gold Coast football manager Marcus Ashcroft said:

“We had been clear with our expectations to Hawthorn throughout the trade period and to their credit they worked incredibly hard, especially late in the piece, to satisfy our needs.

“In addition to accepting Hawthorn’s offer we were able to generate an additional future second round selection.

“As a result we have been able to secure a significantly stronger hand next year which we can either use at the draft, or during the exchange period like we did this year to secure Pearce Hanley.

“Jaeger has played a key role in establishing and growing the Gold Coast SUNS, and we wish him all the very best in the future.”
