However, it wasn’t all happy endings – Bryce Gibbs was denied his desired move to the Adelaide Crows, giving him no choice but to remain with the Carlton Blues in 2017.

Hawthorn made the Gold Coast Suns an offer of picks No.10 and No.48 earlier in the week but were knocked back by the Suns who indicated they would send O’Meara to the draft if the Hawks couldn’t come up with an improved offer.

It came down to the last hour of the trade period but the Hawks managed to broker a deal with Carlton where they gave the Blues picks No.48, No.66 and No.70 for GWS’ 2017 second-round pick.

The Hawks then traded pick No.10 and the Giants’ future pick to the Suns in a deal that got O’Meara across. The Suns also picked up another future-second rounder through a picks swap with Fremantle.

In the end, Gold Coast president Tony Cochrane did renege to some degree on his demand of two first-round draft picks – however, the Suns can be happy that they have a strong hand for both this year’s draft and next’s.

One man who did not renege on anything however was Carlton list manager Stephen Silvagni who refused to permit Bryce Gibbs’ passage to the Adelaide Crows.

The Blues demanded that Adelaide come up with either two first-round picks or one first-round pick and a star player, but the Crows refused to meet those demands and as a result no deal was done.

Silvagni did managed to acquire yet more former-GWS players from the Blues with Caleb Marchbank, Jarrod Pickett and Rhys Palmer all joining the club in exchange for the 2017 first-round pick the Blues picked up earlier that morning along with Bille Smedts in the Zach Tuohy trade.

The 2017 first-round pick, originally starting with Geelong, moved in the space of one day to Carlton, then to GWS, and finally landed at Richmond as part of a trade that saw GWS officially gain Brett Deledio.

The Tigers did have a nice win on the final day of trading, picking up Josh Caddy for the low cost of pick No.24 and a swap of later picks.

The Western Bulldogs secured Travis Cloke for the low price of pick No.76, and the Sydney Swans moved into the top ten of the draft in a pick swap with Port Adelaide.

Other players to move on deadline day were Jarrod Witts and Jarryd Lyons to Gold Coast, Nathan Hrovat and Marley Williams to North Melbourne, Shane Kersten to Fremantle, Patrick McKenna to Melbourne, Nathan Vardy to West Coast, James Stewart to Essendon, Aaron Black to Geelong, Will Hoskin-Elliott and Lynden Dunn to Collingwood, Jack Frost to Brisbane, and Koby Stevens to St Kilda.
