Qewy has moved up the order of entry after being handed a 0.5kg weight penalty for the Melbourne Cup, following the seven-year old’s win in the Geelong Cup on Wednesday.

The gelding led from start to finish to win by a head in front of Grey Lion with Oceanographer a further half-length back at Geelong.

While he has shortened up in the bookies market, it will come at a price for the Charlie Appleby-trained champion.

Racing Victoria’s chief handicapper Greg Carpenter was happy to use Qewy’s Geelong opposition as a gauge on the penalty.

“Qewy was a narrow winner of the Geelong Cup over fellow import Grey Lion in what was a truly run race,” Carpenter said.

“Qewy carried 1kg less than Grey Lion at Geelong, and is now handicapped to carry 0.5kg less than that horse in the Melbourne Cup.”

The stayer from the famous Godolphin stables will be carrying 50.5kg now, but that weight is expected jump up another one kilogram when the field is finalised, as it will for all runners.

Because of Chris Waller’s scratching of Preferment on Thursday, the entire field will be pushed up in weight to meet the minimum 57kg limit. That will leave Big Orange and Our Ivanhowe carrying 57kgs at the top of the field.

The win at Geelong and subsequent weight penalty has pushed Qewy up to 31st in the order of entry, edging him closer to that final 24-horse field.

However, there are at least four horses out of the Cup that remain in the order of entry, including Preferment (3rd but scratched), Sacred Master (currently 28th), Tally (15th), and Zanteca (26th).

That gives Qewy a provisional spot of at least 27th.

Approximately eight horses ahead of him are yet to confirm they will take part in the Cup, while there is always a chance of scratchings in the big field.

Those horses that are currently in the running include Tarzino (7th), The United States (8th), Hartnell (9th), Exospheric (13th), Scottish (14th), Sir John Hawkwood (20th), Howard Be Thy Name (21st) and Fanatic (25th).

Just three horses have won the Geelong-Melbourne Cup double.

Two of those instances, Americain in 2010 and Dunaden in 2011, were given the same 0.5kg of additional weight.

This is also the smallest weight penalty for a Geelong Cup winner since Dunaden.

Races to watch this week for Melbourne Cup details include the Cox Plate and Moonee Valley Cup on Saturday, and Bendigo Cup next week.
