The 2016 Cox Plate has been defined by one of the most tantalising matchups in recent history, as Hartnell looks to dethrone the champion mare on a winning streak, Winx. Follow all the live race highlights, updates and results on The Roar from 5pm (AEDT).

Winx has cast a dominant shadow over Australian racing in the past 12 months, piecing together a tantalising 12-race winning streak leading into the Plate.

Her last start win at the Caulfield Stakes only strengthened her position as the five-year-old looks to win back-to-back Cox Plate titles.

Despite Winx being the hot favourite to make the bookies day a nightmare, Hartnell is shaping up to be the biggest threat to the winning machine in quite some time.

With impressive wins at Chelmsford, Turnbull and the Hill Stakes in his last three starts, Hartnell brings a winning streak of his own into the race.

Hartnell could become just the second internationally-trained horse to win the Cox Plate if he can get past the field from a starting barrier seven.

While all the attention will be focused on the big two, there’s still eight other contenders in the field.

Yankee Rose looks to be the best of the rest, coming off the back of a last start Champions Stakes win at Randwick earlier in the month.

The three-year-old filly has plenty of promise from a short career and could cause the upset if she’s allowed to pace herself well towards the front and get the jump on the final stretch.

A barrier one start may hinder her, but keep an eye out for Yankee Rose on the final turn.

Vadamos is an interesting case, coming in as an international runner. He’s had wins in three of his last five starts, but they’ve all been at shorter distances.

While certainly no slouch running over 2000 metres, his recent form in Europe makes it hard to gauge what kind of race he’ll run today in different conditions.

Lucia Valentina and Hauraki aren’t far behind, but don’t place too much threat for the winning contenders.

Both are strong runners though and a place finish could be on the horizon if they can find galloping room through traffic towards the final 300 metres.

Black Heart Bart ran second to Winx in a shortened three-horse field in the Caulfield Stakes.

An overall strong field is just overshadowed by two of the premier race horses in the country right now.

Prediction
It’s a two-horse race.

The rest of the field isn’t awful, but they just so happen to be in the presence of greatness.

Hartnell will be one of the toughest tests Winx has had to come up against in a long time and a real threat to the winning streak. But, it’s so hard to bet against Winx right now.

She hasn’t just been winning races, she’s dominated nearly every one of those 12 winning starts to get here and it will be one massive hill to climb for any horse to stop her from taking another Cox Plate.

1. Winx
2. Hartnell
3. Vadamos

4. Yankee Rose
