Match Preview:

The Cairns Taipans get their first home game of the 2016-17 NBL season to get Round 4 underway, but it doesn’t guarantee their first victory with a tough match against Melbourne United. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:30pm (AEDT).

The ridiculously tough start to the season for the Taipans doesn’t get much easier here, despite the fact they are finally playing on their home court.

Having played all the best teams in the competition so far, including the Sydney Kings and Perth Wildcats on the road, they have struggled to build any momentum, which has been made even harder by the fact they haven’t played two games in any week yet.

However, the Taipans have shown glimpses of their best, particularly when they led the game against Perth and then took them to overtime.

Their execution down the stretch, though, something that always suffers on the road, has been ordinary and as such, they haven’t managed to get that vital win despite being in the contest.

Last weekend was worse though for the Taipans as they went down to the Adelaide 36ers, and despite not losing big they always looked like the worse team on the floor.

Their offence was far too one-dimensional, and against a tough Melbourne team led by David Andersen and Majok Majok on defence, this is something they are going to have to work on.

For United, it’s been a mixed start to the season and maybe not one that they would have been after, given how many home matches they have had and their schedule, which should have had them as championship favourites.

While they have played double the number of games the Taipans have, they have only won three of six thus far, including two of four at home which is something they will need to work on.

In a league where every win could make the difference between a spot in the top four and missing out, taking care of home court is crucial and despite one road win, United now need to pick up a few extra games on the road, particularly with their number of away games later in the season.

Last weekend, United got the better of the Brisbane Bullets in their first match thanks to a David Andersen masterclass, before they went down to the Wildcats by three points without superstar guard Chris Goulding.

The talk is Goulding may still be injured for this game, so United need to ensure they have some other scoring threats firing.

Prediction
Despite being on the road, United have enough talent to get the win here. With David Andersen leading the way, the Taipans will struggle to put up enough points.

United by 7.
