Australia is coming off a 26-6 victory over New Zealand a fortnight ago in Perth and will be eager to get off to a winning start at the Four Nations in their quest for their first title since 2011.
Mal Meninga has named several players to make their Australian debuts including Matt Moylan, Justin O’Neill, James Maloney, Jake Trbojevic and Jake Friend.
Boyd Cordner, Cooper Cronk, and Shannon Boyd all featured heavily in the Kangaroos’ defeat of the Kiwis in the warm-up match and should continue their strong form into the tournament opener.
NRL grand final duo James Maloney and Valentine Holmes should also prove to be a massive threat, with both starring in Cronulla’s drought-breaking premiership win and Holmes also playing a vital role for Australia in his debut Test two weeks ago.
It’s the first time the two sides have met in 109 years, and it’s no surprise that the Kangaroos will start favourites. But the pride, passion, and power possessed by the Bravehearts should not be underestimated.
The key match-up for this test is between the two fullbacks; Matt Moylan for Australia and Lachlan Coote for Scotland. Moylan featured in all three State of Origin matches for New South Wales in 2016, while Coote claimed a premiership with the Cowboys in 2015.
Forwards Aaron Woods, Jake Trbojevic and Trent Merrin will also have plenty to prove in the Kangaroos’ Scotland encounter to determine their destiny.
A dominate performance will put Australia in good stead to reclaim their world no. 1 status while a loss to the Scots could seriously harm their chances of claiming the Four Nations title with matches against England and New Zealand still to come.
Coote is a major addition to the Bravehearts lineup. He will add a new dimension to the Scots’ attack alongside fellow NRL stars Euan Aitken, Luke Douglas, and Kane Linnett as well as Super League veterans Danny Brough, Dale Ferguson, Ben Kavanagh, Matty Russell and Lewis Tierney.
Scots coach Steve McCormack has selected a talented group of players, but the big question is whether this relatively untested side can gel together, especially against the might of a big-three nation.
Prediction
The Kangaroos will get off to a great start with an emphatic win over the Bravehearts.
