So, you’ve got yourself a runner in your office sweep for the 2016 Melbourne Cup, but how can you tell whether you’ve won (or lost) anything? Never fear – we’re here to help.

With 24 horses in the ‘race that stops the nation’, it can be hard to make out which horse is yours. So here’s a quick run-down of what all the horses are wearing.

1. Big Orange
Jockey: Jamie Spencer
Odds: $14

Disappointingly (and confusingly), Big Orange does not have orange colours. Instead, look for the yellow shirt with black and yellow sleeves and white cap.

2. Our Ivanhowe
Jockey: Dwayne Dunn
Odds: $41

White sleeves with a purple sash cutting through a red torso. Purple cap.

3. Curren Mirotic
Jockey: Tommy Berry
Odds: $51

Black and white stripes, complemented by red armband slashes on the arms. Think Collingwood Magpies with a little extra colour.

4. Bondi Beach
Jockey: Ryan Moore
Odds: $10

Lots of blue here, with a white stripe on both arms and a similarly-coloured cap the only points of contrast.

5. Exospheric
Jockey: Damien Oliver
Odds: $21

Nigh-identical to Our Ivanhoe, with white sleeves, red torso and purple sash, the only difference is going to be Damien Oliver’s white cap.

6. Hartnell
Jockey: James McDonald
Odds: $5.50

All blue. There’s a fair bit of the colour across the field this year thanks to the number of Godolphin runners.

Jockey James Doyle on Hartnell.

7. Who Shot Thebarman
Jockey: Hugh Bowman
Odds: $34

Orange top with a few white polka dots and white cap.

8. Wicklow Brave
Jockey: Frankie Dettori
Odds: $16

A royal purple top offset by orange piping. Fairly distinct.

9. Almoonqith
Jockey: Michael Walker
Odds: $34

More blue here. There are a couple of white dashes across the shoulders, while Michael Walker’s cap seems to have a North Melbourne Kangaroos theme with its blue and white stripes.

10. Gallante
Jockey: Blake Shinn
Odds: $51

Surprise, surprise, we’ve got another blue rider. The only contrast is two white dashes above the elbow.

11. Grand Marshal
Jockey: Ben Melham
Odds: $31

Red top with yellow sleeves and cap. Noticeable, to say the least.

12. Jameka
Jockey: Nicholas Hall
Odds: $8

A noticeably swampy theme here: blue and green hoops don both the cap and top.

Jameka's impressive Caulfield Cup win has resulted in a 1.5kg Melbourne Cup for Ciaron Maher's star mare.

13. Heartbreak City
Jockey: Joao Moreira
Odds: $19

Lots of yellow here with some navy blue piping.

14. Sir John Hawkwood
Jockey: Blake Spriggs
Odds: $67

Both the sleeves and torso are white on top and red below – not dissimilar to the Sydney Swans, albeit with a jagged edge. The cap is white with a red flower.

15. Excess Knowledge
Jockey: Vlad Duric
Odds: $67

Black top with gold lettering and cap.

16. Beautiful Romance
Jockey: Damian Lane
Odds: $67

The silks are all blue, the cap all white. Kind of like a smurf.

17. Almandin
Jockey: Kerrin McEvoy
Odds: $10

Blue shirt with white armbands and a red cap.

18. Assign
Jockey: Katelyn Mallyon
Odds: $71

Blue cap, blue shirt with white armbands.

19. Grey Lion
Jockey: Glen Boss
Odds: $61

Think Sydney Uni’s Shute Shield jersey here; blue and yellow hoops with white sleeves and cap.

20. Oceanographer
Jockey: Chad Schofield
Odds: $9

Another Godolphin horse, another set of all-blue silks. Red cap.

21. Secret Number
Jockey: Stephen Baster
Odds: $31

Yet another all-blue shirt, this time complemented with a black cap.

22. Pentathlon
Jockey: Mark Du Plessis
Odds: $126

A maroon – sorry – claret shirt with yellow diamonds across the chest and a blue and yellow armband on each sleeve. The cap is claret and blue.

23. Qewy
Jockey: Craig Williams
Odds: $29

Godolphin’s final horse is, unsurprisingly, ridden by a jockey in the final set of all-blue silks, this time with a yellow cap.

24. Rose Of Virginia
Jockey: Ben E Thompson
Odds: $126

The final horse is undoubtedly the most noticeable. Jockey Ben Thompson will wear a bevvy of diagonal white, yellow and pink stripes, with a hooped cap to match.
