“Gee, he travelled well. How lucky am I mate?

“The elation, the elation is unreal mate. Been well prepared by Lloyd [Williams – the owner]. He won in October there and got into the race and he just gave him a nice freshen up and typical of Lloyd he knows what to do with these races.

“Just a dream race. Great to be part of it again. Second cup. I love the Melbourne Cup.”

Lucky indeed.

McEvoy also dedicated a good portion of his post-race interview to his pregnant wife Kathy. They are currently expecting their fourth child.

“Hopefully she didn’t cheer too hard and pop the baby out.

“It’s funny, when I spoke to Lloyd [Williams] the other day he said ‘When is the baby due?’ and I said ‘don’t worry I’ll be there on Tuesday regardless of the situation’.

“Kathy was aware of that. Great to have it done. They’ll be thrilled.

“My wife Kathy has been handling the brunt of the workload with the kids in Sydney while I’ve been down here riding winners in Melbourne. So I’d like to thank you, my lovely wife.”
