Lloyd Williams is now the first owner ever to win the Melbourne Cup five times, with Almandin ridden by Kerrin McEvoy winning the 156th running of the great race.

With the half-a-nose victory over Heartbreak City, the Williams stable must be very happy with their Cup, having had five runners this year.

With McEvoy the chosen jockey, it was clear this was the stable’s best shot at a Cup win this year.

After the race, Williams was bullish about the race, and about the effort of his jockey and his horse.

“It’s big for me. I am a Melburnian”

“You need a lot of luck to win this race, a lot of things to go right for you.”

He went on to describe his love for the great race in no uncertain terms…

“I haven’t seen anything that comes near this race anywhere around the world.

“Success didn’t come quickly. We’re still learning.”

On the performance of his horse, he was very impressed. And why wouldn’t he be?

“He gave it a super ride. It’s been really rehabilitated, this horse, he has done a tendon. It reminds me of What a Nuisance in 1985,” he said.

“Great atmosphere. Sad I haven’t been here before, to be honest.

“I could never have said to you in June that Almandin would definitely stand up.”

Trainer Robert Hickmott hasn’t said too much in the aftermath, but we’ll continue to update this post.

Tony Williams, trainer of runner-up Heartbreak City, was disappointed his horse couldn’t quite get there in the end but praised him for a good run. He promised that the horse would be back for the 2017 Melbourne Cup.

“I gave him all the pushing and shoving I could from the stands… it’s a pity we didn’t have something to tow us into the straight a little further but I am delighted.

“We will lock him up until next year. This is where he is coming, all being well.”
