Sovereign Nation was alongside all along, coming from the back and following the jump in the final 200 metres, but the legs died late and Demonstrate was able to get home by half a length.

Race 7: MELBOURNE CUP (3200 metres)

Almandin has won the 2016 Melbourne Cup in one of the tightest and most thrilling finishes in recent Cup history.

Heartbreak City fought the winner right up to the post after breaking away from the field with pre-race favourite Hartnell with 300 metres to go.

Hartnell lost his legs with 200 to go and fell back, leaving it a two-horse race. And what a race it was.

They fought nose-to-nose right up to the post, exchanging the lead on every stride and refusing to give in. But it was Almandin who edged ahead at the post by a nose to gift owner Lloyd Williams a record sixth Melbourne Cup.
