Flemington put on a stunner for Derby Day on Saturday with not a cloud in the sky, but what will the weather be like for the 2016 Melbourne Cup?

Melbourne is renowned for being able to throw up four seasons in one day at any given moment, and November 1 could be no different.

A major front came through Victoria on Sunday and has changed the forecast for the big day, with the chance of rain coming into play.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), the grey clouds will be hanging around for most of the day with some drips and drops expected to come down around midday and through to the afternoon.

There are scattered showers forecast throughout the day, specifically during early morning and afternoon right in time for the Cup itself.

While there is a 70 per cent chance of rain on the day, the amount looks to be too small to cause a massive impact. The BoM is forecasting a total rainfall of between just one and three millimetres, so given the Flemington surface drains superbly well, those few showers are unlikely to dramatically impact the field under foot.

If the heavens do open though, keep an eye on the track conditions and rating for your bets.

There will be 20-30 km/h winds during the morning coming from the north-west, which are forecast to swing around from the south-west during the afternoon, so if you’re heading to the track in a new summer dress and a lot of skin showing, you might not have a great time. Take a jacket!

The temperature will be hitting single figures throughout the morning to accommodate those strong winds but is expected to head up to the mid teens for the race at 3pm (AEDT).

A top of 17 degrees is scheduled in.

Dew and frost shouldn’t be an issue in the morning, but the track is slated to be damp and a bit wet for the Cup anyway.

To top it off, the gloomy clouds will still be hitting the big crowd with a very high UV rating (8 on the index scale), so slap on the sunscreen and pack an extra bottle just in case.

All in all, it’s shaping up to be a bit of a drizzly and gloomy day overall, but certainly nothing torrential that could ruin everything.

Now, for those of you who’d like a second opinion on the weather, Weatherzone are predicting much the same forecast as the BoM, although they’re saying there will almost certainly be showers when the Melbourne Cup starts at 3:00pm (AEDT).

They have the chance of rain much higher than the BoM at 90 per cent, although they are forecasting the same 20-30 km/h winds which will swing around from the north-west to the south-west in the arvo.

Weather.com.au have a sunnier outlook for the afternoon, listing the chance of rain at just 15 per cent, and winds coming from the west at just 9 km/h. They do, however, have the same top temperature of 17 degrees forecast for the day.

All information is correct as of 9:40am (AEDT), November 1
