Melbourne Cup day is upon us. The great race will be run for the 156th time on Tuesday at 3pm sharp. Here are The Roar‘s expert tips and predictions.

With the race set to jump precisely on time, we thought we’d get in early for the final word on the Cup. If it’s me, I’m listening to the only racing mentor I’ve ever known: former boss Tristan Rayner.

On top of our racing guru, we also have fellow enthusiasts Cam Rose, Adam Page, Brent Ford and Connor Bennett on board for our first edition of expert tips for horse racing.

But you don’t have to listen to anyone, as we’ll be running a vote on this article to determine who Roarers think will take home the millions of dollars in prizemoney.

So with that said, let’s go to Tristan for the first final tip and prediction for the 2016 Melbourne Cup!

“In summary, if Jameka, Hartnell or Almandin don’t win, the race is wide open. The same goes if the rain comes!

“But I have my tips below for you to consider in your bets, across win, place, each-way, and exotics such as a trifecta or first-four. Best of luck.

Tips
1. Almandin
2. Jameka
3. Hartnell
4. Big Orange (if there’s no rain) / Heartbreak City (if there is)

The roughies: Qewy, Curren Mirotic (if there’s no rain), Grand Marshal (if it’s wet!)

“Best of luck on Cup day.”

Cam Rose

“Six winning chances for mine, five of which were last start winners, with the odd one out being the favourite Hartnell, who has won three races this prep, and run second to Winx twice. Jameka’s Caulfield Cup win can be trusted, and she should get the run of the race given her barrier and how it should be run.

“Oceanographer’s Lexus Stakes win on Saturday was stunning, and that race always stacks up in the Cup. Almandin has been prepped for one big Cup sting for years, and will be hard to hold out. Wicklow Brave profiles as well as internationals can, and is peaking at the right time of year. European jumper’s can often run a big race, and Heartbreak City is that horse this year, in winning form.

“Jameka to prove too good for them, but that might be the heart and not the head talking!”

Adam Page

“Almandin for me. The Stable andjockey combo should always be respected, and this horse has had the right grounding.

“I’m terrified of Oceanographer. It was impressive in the Lexus on Saturday and the stable have been near unbeatable this Spring.

“Heartbreak City has the turn of foot required to win a Melbourne Cup. If there is any rain, and there is likely to be some at this stage, and Our Ivanhowe definitely deserves an each way ticket.”

Brent Ford

“Again the race that stops a nation is here, it seems every year we say anything can win it and this year is no exception.

“I have Heartbreak City on top, usually runs around with much more weight and the journey will have no question mark.

“Qewy, Almandin and Secret Number the next best.”

Connor Bennett

“The handicap nature of the race always makes it a difficult one to call, especially with so many top-class horses in the field.

“Just to throw a spanner in the works, the chance of rain could very well affect the track underfoot and could change up the whole race.

“Hartnell is the heavily backed favourite at the moment, and although Oceanographer is on level terms with Jameka as one of the top three runners, the later should be shaping up for a one-on-one with Hartnell.

“There’s plenty of talent across the field and an upset is always on the card in a race this size.

“For mine, it will be a tough ask to deny Godolphin their first win with Hartnell. Three wins and a pair of second place finishes in the last five starts is nearly as good a form you could ask for coming into the Cup.

“1. Hartnell
2. Big Orange
3. Jameka
4. Almandin”

Malcolm Turnbull

The PM is on the fence a little, going with no Aussie (there’s only one in the field), instead getting on the favourite Hartnell and the also hedging on the local flavour Bondi Beach. Yes, I know Bondi Beach is from Ireland.

“I’m tipping Hartnell after the win at the Turnbull Stakes, and as the Member for Wentworth, I’ll also back Bondi Beach.”

Good onya Malc.
