Athletes are always hot property in the dating market. That became abundantly clear during the Rio Olympics earlier this year.

Rio’s record-breaking order of 450,000 condoms, which breaks down to 42 per athlete, or two per day if they stay the full two weeks, was mind boggling.

Add to that the incredible number of athletes who had jumped on board dating apps such as Tinder and Bumble and it’s a recipe for a hot sticky mess.

People love sex, and athletes are no different.

It should come as little surprise then to find Wests Tigers star centre Tim Simona emerging as a finalist in Cosmopolitan’s Bachelor of the year search.

Simona, who has played 79 matches for the Tigers since debuting in 2011, is one of only two professional athletes to feature in the top 30 which also includes tradies, real estate agents, and media personalities.

Michael Roeger is the other athlete to feature in the top 30. Roeger claimed a bronze medal in the Paralympics at Rio this year and has also completed a Bachelor of communications and advertising.

24-year-old Simona commented in Cosmopolitan that he would likely receive a roasting from teammates for even entering the search.

“They all know I have the best body and looks in the team (only joking),” Simona said.

“I’m sure they’ll give me a bit of stick, but it’s all in good fun.”

It’s not the first foray an NRL star has made into the public dating realm this year.

In July Cronulla Sharks players Valentine Holmes and Fa’amanu Brown auctioned themselves off in the name of charity to help raise funds for Kurt Drysdale, a Cronulla Junior who had become paralysed as a result of a tackle that went wrong.

Simona is a popular player among Tigers fans and enjoys a strong social media following with his Instagram featuring more than 27,000 followers.

Cosmo’s Bachelor of the Year will be named in February 2017.
