Wayne Bennett’s tenure as England coach has been nothing short of pathetic.

After a dismal performance against the Kangaroos brought an end to their Four Nations hopes, the question now is whether the Broncos’ boss is still in charge come of the Poms for next years Rugby League World Cup.

The bottom line is this: Bennett was brought in to make the team better.

Has he succeeded in doing so? Absolutely not.

This team followed the same script they’ve been acting out for the past decade.

Stay competitive for the opening 20-30 minutes of a match before crumbling away when push comes to shove.

Given the fact everyone knew of the mental weakness currently plaguing the English side one would assume it would be Bennett’s top priority heading into training camp.

Either he failed in changing the mindset of the side, or the team is incapable of changing past habits.

Whatever the reason Bennett is obviously not the man to take this team forward.

On top of this there comes the debate regarding his relationship with the media.

Bennett has reiterated his belief that it is not his job to promote the game and that he’s simply there to coach a footy team.

Unfortunately, sport doesn’t work that way anymore.

Players are held accountable for their actions off the field and the way they carry themselves in the public eye, so why should this be any different?

They no doubt would love to only have the responsibility of turning up every week and playing footy but club’s pay their players to endorse a brand.

Wayne Bennett was brought in to endorse the game of rugby league whether he likes it or not – and to that, he has once again failed.

So when you’re unsuccessful in bettering a team, and refusing to accept your full responsibilities in your role why should you remain in charge going forward?
