Behind the barriers: Five bets for Saturday

The Spring Carnival might be done and dusted, but there is still a little gap between now and Christmas.

So, ahead of the festive season, I thought I’d try and help out the Roarers by fattening their wallets with some winners this weekend.

Here are my five best tips for the weekend.

Ballarat, race nine: #9 – I’ll Fly Away
I’ll Fly Away is a really progressive mare for Darren Weir who has been pretty good since arriving from overseas.

She ran over 2040m under the lights at the Valley last Friday night. She looked to be doing nothing on the turn, but once she picked up, she was strong and passed Mount Omei in the last stride.

With jockey Ben Allen, she has upside and ticks the boxes for me.

Rosehill, race three: #5 – Somebody
A mare from the bush who trialled like Black Caviar, winning first up with a brilliant finishing burst to win – still with plenty left in reserve.

There should be good speed in front, which will allow jockey Tim Clark to let her find her feet and look to ambush late like she did first up. I’m keen on her.

Eagle Farm, race two: #4 – You Make Me Smile
Glad I got the $13 opening price for this colt, because he is now into $4.50.

A Steve O’Dea trained first-starter that hasn’t been seen in public, I just had to back him on breeding by So You Think, out of Bianca Jewel – a mare that was trained by O’Dea and went on to perform very well at black-type level.

You Make Me Smile draws wide, but that won’t matter at Eagle Farm and the market suggests he is above average. Prepared to take the gamble.

Morphettville Parks, race four: #3 – Fast ‘N’ Rolling
Looks the winner here. Fast ‘N’ Rolling had no market support when resuming and ran somewhat accordingly, beaten well and truly by Just A Bigger Dash, who was backed as if unbeatable that day.

This horse had really good form during the winter at Flemington and though he’s hard in the market here, he should get every chance from the draw.

He’s fitter, has the class and the quality. Should win with normal luck.

Newcastle, race two: #8 – Egg Tart
Of the five, I’m most keen on this galloper. He looked to trial well prior to debuting over the track/distance and just forget he went around. He got badly held up in the early part of the straight and by the time he got clear, the race was all over but he savaged the line and really caught the eye.

He draws wide, so he won’t get in a pocket, and the winner of the race did look smart, so the form reads pretty well I suspect.
