Gary Moorcroft had a respectable career in the AFL, but will mostly be remembered for taking “that mark” back in 2001 to write his name into Aussie Rule’s folklore.

He took arguably one of the greatest marks of all-time against the Western Bulldogs, flying off the back of Dogs forward Ben Johnson and seemingly floating through the clouds to make the grab.

He did win the mark of the year for his effort, but his career was on its way down around that point.

Moorcroft was a hot up and comer in the mid-nineties, winning the Morrish medal as an 18-year old in 1994 before making his debut for the Bombers the very next year.

At 173cm and 86kg, he had a funny kind of build, looking like a short stocky aggressive little man with a natural red mop of hair on his head. The red hair and freckles even gave him a Shermanator type of look.

Anyway, he kicked over 100 goals in his 98 games in the top league, even winning the flag with Essendon in 2000.

But his success would begin to die at the turn of the century, being delisted by the Bombers in 2002 after struggling with form in the midst of a very strong Don’s outfit.

He tried to get his career back on track, eventually being scooped up by the Demons in the offseason, but he played just three games before suffering a devastating knee injury that would rule him out for the year.

The injury was enough for the Dees to delist him as well, and thus ending the career of Gary Moorcroft at the young age of 27.

He was the kind of player that was just there. He was a good footy player, but he didn’t blow anyone out of the water in a career defined by consistency at the start, and a slow decline at the end… and that mark.

With 98 games of experience at senior level, Moorcroft continues to play Aussie Rules after his leave, plying his trade all across the country, still lacing up his boots to this day in the Northern Football League).
