Exploding out of the blocks, Sydney FC were rewarded for a relentless press early in the encounter when Alex Brosque forced a turnover and Josh Brillante smashed home a shot from outside the box to the top left of goal in the 13th minute. Brillante’s first senior professional goal gave the Sky Blues a deserved early lead.

With Brisbane showing real fragility at the back, Sydney then threatened to extend their advantage on several occasions. Once when Milos Ninkovic headed over the crossbar from a good position and on two occasions soon after when Roar keeper Michael Theo was caught out by horrendous back passes.

But unable to make it 2-0, the Sky Blues were forced to head into the break all square when Thomas Kristensen did very well to tuck the ball into the bottom left of goal in the 40th minute.

While Brisbane emerged from the break with more conviction across the park, it remained Sydney FC in the ascendency. An unusual lack of incision up front and some commanding keeping from Theo, however, kept them relatively at bay.

The Roar were threatening on the counter but never really looked like grabbing a winner with a Sky Blues counter of their own deep into injury time through Bernie Ibini only denied by Theo who did well to come out of his box.

The Sky Blues rather fortunate to end the game with 11 men on the field with Rhyan Grant seemingly shown two yellow cards in the second half yet not being issued a red. Post-game discussions suggest he wasn’t shown his first yellow though the referee did pull the card out.

All in all a thrilling encounter with Brisbane finding a way to end Sydney FC’s winning run. The Sky Blues made to pay for a lack of cutting edge up front.

Brisbane Roar 1
Sydney FC 1
