The Milan derby (Derby Della Madonnina) ended in a 2-2 draw that contained high quality entertainment.

For Milan and Inter going into this fixture it was essential that either side would pick up the three points as it would give them bragging rights over their city rivals.

AC Milan was aiming for the win to ensure that they would climb to second place on the Serie A table. Inter Milan (Internazionale) on the other hand came into this fixture in poor form and were looking to prove a point against their frenemies.

It took 20 minutes for both sides to settle down in the match as there were no threatening attacking chances created by both Milan sides. Inter’s Croatian winger Ivan Perisic looked to be the most dangerous player out on the pitch and also came close to scoring on some encounters.

Striker and captain Mauro Icardi had a golden opportunity to break the deadlock for Inter in the 38th minute when a pass was gifted to him in the box only for him to poorly slice the ball away from the goal.

A couple of moments later AC Milan was starting to pick up their tempo and would play on the counter with Colombian striker Carlos Bacca trying to knock on Inter’s door. Finally, a goal arrived in the 43rd minute by Milan’s Spanish midfielder Suso who would masterfully curl the ball into the net beyond the reach of goalkeeper Samir Handanovic.

The build up for this goal came from some smooth and effective counter football by Milan’s Giacomo Bonaventura who dragged out Inter’s defensive wall and would play a composed pass to Suso. The goal gave AC Milan the lead to take into the halftime interval and would put a smile on manager Vincenzo Montella and owner Silvio Berlusconi.

Inter Milan came into the second half to rescue their chances of gaining some points within this match. It only took until the 52nd minute that Inter would score the equaliser through Antonio Candreva’s wonder strike outside the 18-yard box that not even young goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma could block it.

Six minutes later AC Milan would persistently gain the lead back from Suso dribbling around some of Inter’s defenders and scoring a low-cornered goal. It was once again that Suso gave Milan the lead that would see him earn a double.

From that moment on the game was played back and forth. Inter were desperately looking for that second equaliser and AC Milan was simply trying to keep the ball away from the opposition. However, in the 92nd minute of stoppage time, Milan lost their lead and maximum points to a desperate Perisic goal that was set up in a corner with Inter’s keeper pushing up the field.

A score of 2-2 was a fair result of this local Milanese rivalry that saw Italian football shown at its highest order. This fixture certainly didn’t fail to disappoint and shows that the Serie A still remains as one of the most technical leagues in world football.
