Fremantle’s Michael Johnson will appear in court in the new year after being charged with assault occasioning bodily harm following a late-night incident a couple of weeks ago.

Johnson allegedly assaulted a school teacher at a kebab shop in Perth’s central suburb of Leederville, after the teacher was filming the Dockers defender.

Johnson then confronted the man, leading to the incident which has landed him with a court date for January 18.

The Dockers released a statement following the incident condemning Johnson’s actions.

“We are treating the matter seriously and we are very disappointed that Michael placed himself in such a situation last weekend,” club chief executive Steve Rosich said at the time.

“Michael, who was on leave at the time, is a senior player and a member of our leadership group.

“In this instance the position Michael placed himself in, including his alleged behaviour, was not acceptable. As a club we support the person and challenge the behaviour.”

At the time, Rosich said the club would not be making any further statement until the entire legal process surrounding Johnson was completed, although he did say the club was keeping the AFL constantly updated throughout the process.

The incident capped off a year to forget in 2016 for Johnson.

The 32-year-old was one of a number of star Dockers, including Nat Fyfe, Aaron Sandilands and Harley Bennell, who missed the majority of the season as he battled a hamstring injury.

The absence of the influential quartet saw the Dockers finish well clear of the finals, just a year after they claimed the minor premiership and made a deep run in the finals during 2015.
