England opening batsman Alex Hales gave Victorian Premier Cricket a crack this week, playing in a T20 for the Fitzroy Doncaster Lions against the Monash Tigers.

Hales smashed seven fours and a six in his unbeaten 42 off 27 balls as Fitzroy won the match with 10 overs to spare. The Lions chased down the Tigers’ total of 63 losing just one wicket.

The 27-year-old pulled out of England’s tour of Bangladesh recently and wasn’t picked for their tour of India. Instead, travelling to Melbourne in the hopes of securing a last-minute place in a Big Bash side.

Hales is expected to play in four T20s for the Lions after they squeezed him into the team. They were able to navigate the player points cap when premiership star Matt Frith succumbed to a shin injury.
