Nico Rosberg has been crowned F1 world champion after finishing second in the final race in Abu Dhabi.

The German simply needed to finish on the podium to claim his first world title as he finished on 385 points for the season, five points ahead of fellow teammate Lewis Hamilton.

The Englishman disobeyed orders from his team to “pick up the pace” as he attempted to push Rosberg outside the final three.

But Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen couldn’t catch him as Rosberg became just the third German to win the F1 title.

The Mercedes driver dominated the season, spending 75 per cent of his season inside the top three.

It’s also the second time in history that a father and son duo have won the F1 title, with Keke Rosberg winning the championship while representing Finland in 1982.

Nico now faces the dilemma of keeping the number six, the same number his father had when he won the title, or taking on the number one sticker.
