It pays to know all the rugby laws in case the unexpected happens, like this rare moment in the National 1 competition in England.

Rosslyn Park’s Harry Leonard had to think on his feet while attempting a conversion against Coventry after the ball fell off the tee during his kicking routine.

The referee stating that he had “started his run up” [in accordance with Law 9.b.3 part c]: ‘If the ball falls over after the kicker begins the approach to kick, the kicker may then kick or attempt a drop goal.’

The quick-thinking flyhalf picked the ball up before the charging defender got too close, evaded a tackle and then slotted an unbelievable drop goal 25 metres out from the posts, and just 10 metres from the sideline.

In a state of disbelief, the referee exclaimed “ooh he’s nailed it” before awarding the two-point conversion.
