Australia and New Zealand go head to head at Manuka Oval in the second of their three-match ODI series. Join The Roar from 2:20pm for our live scores and coverage of the match.

The hosts hold a 1-0 lead after their victory at the SCG in the first clash by 68 runs.

For Australia and skipper Steve Smith, Sunday’s game saw a welcome return to form. Before the first ODI against the Black Caps, Smith had failed to win the toss or make a century all summer, while the only victory he had enjoyed as skipper was in the dead rubber Test against South Africa when his side was already 0-2 down.

The Australians were no doubt grateful to Smith for driving to them to what proved to be a winning total of 8/324, after being left floundering at 4-92 at one stage of their innings.

Smith struck 14 fours and cleared the rope for four sixes on his way to a brilliant 164 from 157 deliveries – his knock would have come as a big relief to an Aussie side that had lost all five matches during their previous ODI series against South Africa.

Smith’s innings was his own highest in an ODI, and the highest by any player in a one-dayer at the SCG.

Despite a century by opener Martin Guptill, the Black Caps lost wickets at regular intervals, which scuppered their hopes of pulling off a surprise victory.

Only while Guptill was putting together a third wicket partnership of 92 with Jimmy Neesham, and while Colin Munro was smashing 49 off of 59 balls, did the Kiwis even threaten to reach their imposing target.

Guptill thrashed 10 fours and 6 sixes in his 114, scored from just 102 balls, his 11th ODI century and first against Australia. On the way, he became the quickest player from his country to register 5,000 runs in ODIs.

So will New Zealand bounce back from their first-game loss and square this series up? Or will Australia reclaim the Chappell-Hadlee series with a win in Canberra? Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of this second ODI from 2:20pm (AEDT).
