For the first time since 2004, the Sydney Swans have appointed a stand-alone captain to lead them in 2017.

On Friday, midfielder Josh Kennedy was named captain, succeeding the duo of Kieren Jack and Jarrad McVeigh.

The Kennedy name is synonymous with leadership in Aussie rules, and Swans fans will hope Josh will be able to follow in the footsteps of his dad and grandad.

The challenge that awaits the 28-year-old is a tough one, after the Swans failed to deliver again this year.

Despite having one of the strongest lists over the past decade, the Swans have only been able to win one premiership. And although many of their stars are on the right side of 30, the Swans’ challengers keep emerging.

With the continued improvement of their crosstown rivals, GWS, and the threat of a full-strength Bulldog outfit in 2017, the Swans will need to capitalise on a great period of stability in order to stay relevant in a tough AFL market.

Success can never be taken for granted in the modern AFL game.

It doesn’t seem too long ago that experts were talking up the premiership chances of Fremantle and the Gold Coast Suns.
