The WWE have held a press conference at London’s O2 arena, announcing the WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament to be held on January 14 and 15.
The aim is to create a UK-based show on their WWE Network, much like 205 Live, their cruiserweight-based show created after the success of their Cruiserweight Classic tournament.
WWE superstar and inaugural WWE Universal Champion Finn Balor, from Bray in County Wicklow, Ireland, said: “This tournament is the bridge between the independent scene and the WWE. I would have loved to have been able to compete in it.”
The two-day tournament will take place in Blackpool’s Empress Ballroom and crown the inaugural WWE United Kingdom Champion. There will be 16 competitors and two backups in case of injury, all from both the UK and Ireland:
Ricky J McKenzie ‘RJM’
Sam Gradwell
‘The Bruiserweight’ Pete Dunne
Chris Tyler
Dan Moloney
HC Dyer
Jack Starz
‘The Hair Apparent’ James Drake
Jordan Devlin
‘The Righteous Killer’ Joseph Conners
Ringo Ryan
Roy Johnson
‘The Muscle Cat’ Saxon Huxley
Tiger Ali
‘The Don’ Trent Seven
Tyler Bate
Tucker
Tyler T-Bone
Wolfgang
Although I don’t know who the backups are, seeing 16 of these 18 stars compete will surely be a spectacle to witness.
William Regal confirmed later that the contestants can still perform on the independent wrestling circuit, unlike most on WWE’s main roster, Cruiserweight division and their NXT roster.
