Australian rookie Thon Maker was an intimidating force and Matthew Dellavedova hit key shots in Milwaukee’s upset win over the Toronto Raptors in game one of their first-round NBA playoff series.

The Bucks comprehensively defeated the Raptors 97-83 to silence what had been a ferocious Toronto crowd on Saturday.

Maker, the 20-year-old, 216cm tall Sudanese refugee raised in Australia was superb fighting for rebounds and intimidating Raptors’ shooters around the basket.

The athletic rookie’s high-energy play turned the game in the third quarter, sparking the Bucks to erase a six point deficit and take the lead.

The Raptors challenged late in the third quarter but Dellavedova hit an open three-pointer to give the Bucks a 71-68 lead.

The Bucks then ran away with the game, breaking a 17 straight game losing streak for the franchise in playoff game ones.

Maker, who started the game, had four points, three rebounds and three blocks in 15 minutes and Dellavedova came off the bench for 11 points in 31 minutes.

Bucks’ star Giannis Antetokounmpo had 28 points and eight rebounds.
