Every week there’s nine winners and nine losers – but for some clubs the wins are worth more than four points.

This could be breaking a hoodoo, arresting a slide or a win against the odds – all can give a team an immeasurable confidence boost that can last for weeks and lead to more wins. But conversely there’s those losses that can engulf a club and cause more damage than meets the eye, potentially wrecking a whole season.

Biggest winners
GWS – with the Swans in trouble and desperate for a win to get their season on track, they would have eyed a home Derby as a huge opportunity. But GWS were having none of that!

They stepped on the back of the neck of big brother as they tried to rise from the canvas and consigned them to a near fatal 0-5 start, showing the Sydneysiders that like to jump on winners that they may have to invest in some new colours!

Tigers – the Demons had the answers to the Tigers’ challenges for three and half quarters but in the end got the chocolates thanks their stars and the Demons misfortunes.

So many wins outside the four points for the Tigers in this one. There’s belief they can come from behind, a win against a side predicted to be around the same mark and a handy 5-0 start to the year.

Cats – percentage suggests they are purring along but they have relied on last-quarter heroics more than once. At the end of the day they just keep winning. 5-0 is a great start and could be 8-0 before the Dogs roll into Geelong for their first big test, by then confidence could be sky high!

Biggest losers
Swans – for obvious reasons! Winless going into a home derby and desperate for points they were again found wanting. Their draw opens up a little before their bye but it will be very hard from here to even make finals…

Eagles – Enhanced their negative reputations as flat track bullies that wilt at the home of football against a previously winless side. No top four for you.

Demons – not only another four points that goes begging but also another ruckman. It is horrible luck for the Dees which will make their challenge of returning to finals that little bit harder.

In keeping with the same theme, and with an eye to Round 6, let’s see who I believe are the teams with the most to gain from a win – and conversely which teams will feel the most pain from a loss.

The Tigers would gain huge credibility with a win over the superior Crows outfit at home, and will head for the airport with confidence.

The Dogs have only been just going OK so far, although still banking wins, a win over the Giants away from home would have the reigning Premiers right up and about as it will take their absolute best for a full four quarters!

And the Bombers, how many had them in their 8? An early eight-point game with the similarly placed Demons.

As for the most to lose this week I have gone for clubs that will either fall back to the pack of clubs fighting for a finals spot – such as Port and the Eagles – or potentially lose touch with that pack with a loss in the Demons and the Saints.
