Australia’s opening match of their Champions Trophy campaign got off to a rough start against New Zealand, as an early fielding blunder helped the Black Caps cause some pain on the scoreboard in the powerplay.

Paceman Mitch Starc and wicketkeeper Matthew Wade were the main culprits, unable to capitalise on a mix-up in the middle of the pitch between Kiwi pair Luke Ronchi and Kane Williamson.

The mishap saw former Australian cricketer Ronchi given a seccond life on 24. He would later be dismissed by John Hastings for 65.

The match would prove to be a washout.

After New Zealand were bowled out for 291, further rain delays saw the Australians reach 3 for 53 in chasing a revised target of 235 from 33 overs, before play was eventually abandoned for the day.

Australia will next play Bangladesh on Monday night at 10:30pm (AEST).
