At the 2017 AFL Grand Final it was Connor Menadue of the Richmond Tigers who won the event.

Menadue missed out on selection for the grand final despite strong form at VFL level for the Tigers this year, but is well known for his slight frame and speed.

Melbourne’s Jayden Hunt started as the favourite in the sprint after winning the first heat in a canter, but appeared to have run out of petrol and couldn’t break out of the field after a slow start.

Josh Williams of North Melbourne won the other heat but also couldn’t break out of the pack in the final event, and instead Menadue’s main rival for the title, surprisingly, was Gold Coast tall backman Steven May.

May led for a decent portion of the sprint but Menadue overtook him in the last few seconds and was confident enough to raise his arms in celebration as he ran through.

Richmond fans certainly would’ve taken the result as a good omen given they lead the match by nine points at halftime as the sprint took place.

Both Menadue and Adelaide’s representative Jordan Gallucci got plenty of applause from the crowd at the game as their participation was announced.
