Youngster Alexander Zverev has qualified for the ATP World Tour Finals for the first time after a stunning 2017 season.
The 20-year-old German will be the youngest player to compete at the season-ending tournament since Juan Martin del Potro in 2008, a year before it moved to its current home at London’s O2 Arena.
Zverev has had a superb season, winning two titles, including Masters tournaments in Rome and Montreal, and climbing to No.4 in the rankings.
He joins Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in booking his place at the event, which begins on November 12, leaving five spots still up for grabs.
“It’s obviously a great event, playing in the O2 Arena is something amazing for any player,” Zverev said on atpworldtour.com.
“The atmosphere is amazing. I’ll be ready for it. This shows me how well I played all over the season, how consistent I was and I think that’s something every player is very proud of.”
Zverev has also qualified for the inaugural Next Gen Finals in Milan the previous week and must now decide whether to play in both.
Players are allowed to skip the Next Gen event, featuring the leading seven players of the year aged 21 and under plus one wild card, if they are in the field for the ATP Finals.
Zverev qualified for the Finals by making the China Open semi-finals after beating fellow young gun Andrey Rublev in straight sets.
The No.2 seed next faces Australia’s Nick Kyrgios.
