Sydney FC are arguably the greatest team in Australian football at the moment, breaking and setting every record they set they eyes on.
In the pre-season a lot of their focus has been on becoming the first A-League team to win back-to-back Premierships and Championships. However there is another record that they just break this season.
The Sky Blues face Wellington Phoenix at Allianz Stadium where they’ve had luck at times in the past, but run into a side that is undefeated at Allianz Stadium in 16 matches. That’s seven short of Brisbane’s 23 between January 2010 and December 2011.
Ange Postecoglou’s side won 15 and drew eight in that time. They scored 49 goals and conceded 16. Graham Arnold’s side have won 12 and drawn four, scoring 33 goals and only conceding five so far.
For so long, that Brisbane Roar have been the benchmark – illustrating just how good this Sydney FC team are.
Sydney’s last defeat at Allianz Stadium came in April last year when a Bruce Djite double earned Adelaide a 2-0 win. Since then no away team has walked out of Moore Park with three points.
They haven’t really come close to losing as well. In the 16 game run they’ve only conceded the first goal three times and have spent just 119 minutes behind at Allianz Stadium.
Their opponents Wellington Phoenix actually hold the record for most consecutive matches undefeated at one venue. They went 24 matches unbeaten at Westpac Stadium between November 2008 and November 2010, but loss matches in-between at other venues used as their home ground. This is another record the Sky Blues can break after they break Brisbane’s record if they can achieve that.
Darije Kalezic has a lot of firepower in this side such as Gui Finkler, Dario Vidosic, Andrija Kaluderovic, and Roy Krishna but whether they can score and defeat the reigning champions Sydney FC looks unlikely given the Sky Blues’ record at home.
