The Roar sat down with former Australian fast bowler Damien Fleming as he picked out some of the challenges facing England ahead of the upcoming Ashes series.

More than a few people have questioned the quality of this England squad, with some believing that it is their weakest ever.

The former swing bowler identified all-rounder Moeen Ali as a crucial factor to whether England is going to enjoy success or not.

With James Anderson and Stuart Broad tasked with the pressure of picking up the bulk of the wickets and uncertainty surrounding fellow all-rounder Ben Stokes’ involvement in the series, Ali’s position becomes even more important.

“Moeen Ali, how many wickets is he going to get in this series?” Fleming asked.

“Now he doesn’t look like an offy (off-spinner) that’s going to rip through you, although he does tend to get wickets when the opposition is underrated.”

Fleming then looked to compare Ali to some legendary offspinners and questioned England’s strike power.

“You look at Harbhajan Singh, Murali, you look at their records in Australia, they’re two of the best offspinners to have played the game…and Moeen Ali is not half the bowler they are, so I see some problems in them getting 20 wickets,” Fleming said.
