The battle for supremacy in the west resumes during Round 5 when the Perth Glory host Adelaide United with both sides requiring a confidence-boosing victory. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 10pm (AEDT).

Perth always seem to be a stronger side on home soil, but they looked all over the place in a 2-0 loss to reigning premiers Sydney FC last weekend.

While they are still sitting in the top six, one win and a draw to go with two losses from their first six games simply isn’t good enough.

They have squandered opportunities, been thin at the back in defence having conceded seven goals in those first four games and struggled to capitalise up front despite Adam Taggart, Andy Keogh and Xavi Torres looking dangerous at times.

There is no better example of the inconsistency on display from the Glory this year than their 2-1 comeback win over the Central Coast Mariners at home a fortnight ago. They struggled for much of the match, before a couple of late goals saved their bacon to ensure them of victory.

Adelaide sit ahead of them on the ladder by a single point thanks to an extra draw. Like Perth though, they have struggled to defend with any consistency early in the season, and it could lead to plenty of goals in this match.

In a similar set of circumstances though, Adelaide come into this game on the back of a 2-0 beating at the hands of Melbourne City.

At home, the performance was a poor one from United, who were blown off the park by two goals in the first quarter of an hour, before their attack and gameplan struggled to ram home any sort of advantage they had during the second half of the contest.

While they managed to draw 2-2 with Melbourne Victory the week before and beat the Brisbane Roar in Round 2, their performances have been well below par. If they are going to improve and compete out west, then it must come down to their midfielders, led by Isaias providing better chances up front and their defence picking up its game.

In truth, whichever team gets the better of the defensive end may take this one, because we can expect plenty of goals.

There is no team news to report for either side.

Prediction
This could be a free-flowing, high-scoring match which comes down to which side can make the most of their opportunities. Perth always play better at home though, and it’s hard to see Adelaide hanging on in the last half-hour once the crowd get involved.

Perth 3 – Adelaide 2.
