The 2017 Melbourne Cup draws near – it’s the biggest day on the racing calendar in Australia, and the biggest day of the year in the eyes of many punters as well.

There are 23 horses in the field this year, one less than the maximum 24 after Who Shot Thebarman was scratched from the race on Saturday.
At 10:30am (AEDT) on Tuesday Morning, Marmelo has moved into favouritism for the Melbourne Cup. After sitting behind Almandin yesterday, punters have now backed Marmelo into the $7 favourite.
Almandin had moved into as low as $8 yesterday, but has now drifted to $9.50 for the win. Still, there are only three horses paying under $10 to take out Australia’s greatest race, with Johannes Vermeer moving in to $9.50
Humidor is priced at $10, Wall of Fire at $11, Rekindling $13 and Max Dynamite at $17.
Almandin is looking for back to back victories after winning the Melbourne Cup in 2016, and is the only horse in the field to have previously won the event.
At the other end of the scale, Gallante at $91 odds to win is considered the least likely of the pack. US Army Ranger is paying $81, with Libran at $71, while Wicklow Brave, Cismotane and Bondi Beach are at $61.

The race itself is scheduled to take place at 3pm AEDT on Tuesday 7 November, at Flemington racecourse in Melbourne.
