Living up to its reputation, Flemington is about to turn on an unusual day, with moderate winds, light rain plus some sunshine all likely.

With a low-pressure system battering NSW yesterday and today, Victoria is missing the brunt of it, however, it’s not all good news, temperatures are plummeting to the point where it may be the coldest Melbourne Cup day in more than a decade.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) the maximum temperature for the day is just 16C, with a low of 10C. In 2006, the temperatures around the track reached just 15.8C, with the coldest on record in 1919 when it only hit 11C.

November this year is shaping up to be the coldest in over two decades, with temperature 5C lower than average.

There will be a good chance of early, light rains that will be lingering from a wet night. There is a 40 per cent chance of 1mm but they should be gone by the late morning. Considering the exceptional drainage systems at Flemington, these early rains shouldn’t affect the races at all.

It is forecast to be all clear conditions for the big race.

Though not much is forecasted, keep an eye on track conditions and rating in case it rains more than expected.

There will be some blustery winds throughout the state, with a large area of the Victorian coast under a heavy winds warning. At the track, winds will be southerly 15 to 25 km/h and increase to 25 to 40 km/h later in the morning. They will then turn southwesterly, 15 to 20 km/h in the late evening.

As if the weather couldn’t get stranger, the BoM has a warning for a very strong UV rating (9 on the index) and recommends good sun protect from about 9:30am to 4:30pm.

So, slip, slop, slap and bring your umbrella!
