Pinot has recorded a surprise victory in the VRC Oaks to give Gai Waterhouse her first win in the race.

Ridden by Stephen Baster, Pinot paid $5.50 for the win for Waterhouse and co-trainer Adrian Bott as the favourite Aloisia faded in the home straight to finish well back in the 2,500-metre event.

There were ominous signs for the favourite when Aloisia lost a shoe in the barrier.

Pinot finished ahead of Bring Me Roses and Hiyaam in the $1 million race as part of Flemington’s Melbourne Cup carnival.

“She is a Group 1 mare with magnificent pedigree. I love when the pressure was on, she just kept finding, and that’s what you want with a really good stayer,” Waterhouse said.

The next big race day at Flemington is on Saturday with the Darley Classic and Emirates Stakes.
