Ivan Franjic has returned to the club he won two championships with after signing a one-year deal with the Brisbane Roar.

“I have a lot of special memories in Brisbane and to come back and have these fans support me again is special,” Franjic said.

The 30-year-old defender’s heroics at the Roar during their successful run earlier this decade made him a fan favourite, with his late equaliser against North Queensland in 2011 and his first penalty against Central Coast in the grand final that season particularly memorable.

He decided to take the next step in 2014, transferring to Russian Premier League side FC Torpedo Moscow, although less than six months into a three-year deal he quit the club due to their failure to pay wages.

The right back returned to the A-League in 2015, playing for hometown team Melbourne City. He was plagued with njuries however, and found himself overseas again after being released from the third year of his contract.

Franjic’s tumultuous post-Roar career continued, as he managed just two appearances for Daegu FC in the Korean K League Classic, before finally returning to the club he called home.

In 111 appearances for the Brisbane Roar, Franjic netted 11 goals. He has also made 20 appearances for the Socceroos since 2013.

His return is a boost for the struggling Queensland side, who’ve started the season with three defeats and two draws in their five matches so far.
